It’s been said that eating is a necessity but cooking is a journey that feeds the soul. A culinary excursion, be it sweet or savory, has the power to transport you anywhere as you chop, dice, stir and sauté. Inspired by colors, textures and aromas both familiar and new, food can awaken your creative juices and tap into a primordial desire to create and share.
Here at Ocean Reef Club’s Cooking School we take the art and craft of cooking to superstar level. Beginning each December, a series of classes takes Members from Tuscany to the coast of the Caribbean and all points in between. Members have the opportunity to learn from legendary chefs, cookbook authors and exciting newcomers. Each class is a three-hour interactive, hands-on or demonstration session that takes Members through step-by-step instruction, punctuated with personal stories, amusing anecdotes and insider tips. The topics include everything from soup to nuts: ingredients, shortcuts, innovative techniques, and fast and easy methods. The talented visiting chefs have included Art Smith, Sara Moulton and Jose Garces and visionaries Michelle Bernstein and John Besh. And best of all, the focus is on healthy foods and having fun. Novice or expert, the Cooking School has something for everybody. Carole Kotkin, director of the Cooking School, who also writes for The Miami Herald and hosts a local radio show, oversees the success of every Ocean Reef Cooking School event. “I love it when students’ dinner plates are clean, they have smiles on their faces and I learn they’ve already signed up for the next class,” she says.
The Vine to Table series appeals to all types of foodies and is wildly popular with Members who love to cook as well as those who adore eating! Each Vine to Table event showcases a perfect pairing between chef and vintner—a collaboration that culminates in palatable bliss for all Ocean Reef attendees. Enlisting an array of internationally acclaimed vineyards—some centuries old, others contemporary purveyors who have mastered the most modern techniques—all bring their unique perspective on winemaking to Ocean Reef as they present groundbreaking pinot noirs and handcrafted cabernets. Every sip is a perfect complement to haute cuisine prepared by some of today’s most renowned chefs for a dinner event that’s memorably delicious and as unique as Ocean Reef itself.
